Gibson Area Hospital & Health Services | Gibson gets it! | Fall/Winter 2017
GibsonHospital.org 12 Designed for students in grades 6 through 8, Safe Sitter teaches young teens life and safety skills for when they are home alone, watching younger siblings or babysitting. “The Safe Sitter class is a wonderful opportunity for students to learn Safe Sitter skills while also incorporating life skills,” says Tanya Windle, Safe Sitter instructor since 2015. “We discuss in great detail with students not just the safety of children, but the safety of themselves. We have opportunities to discuss real- life situations and to play it forward to determine how to handle the situations appropriately, whether it is behavioral or incidental. I feel if they can process all the possibilities of what could happen while babysitting, they are more prepared than if they have the mindset that it will never happen. I love having the opportunity to make a difference and reaping the benefits of learning from the students as well. It is an excellent program, and I am thankful that GAH takes part in providing Safe Sitter classes for our community.” Tanya Windle is also a Baby Central unit secretary, an obstetric technician, a certified nursing assistant, a certified child passenger safety technician and an EMT-B (emergency medical technician basic). Camp Gibson develops future health care careers Camp Gibson hosted an enthusiastic group of eighth- graders during their summertime health career exploration. As part of the five days of activities on the Gibson Area Hospital (GAH) campus, this year’s program included a day at the GAH Community Education Center with dietitian Margery R. Ruch, RD, LDN. In addition to providing some tasty, hands-on learning moments, Ruch discussed the many career opportunities in the field of food and nutrition. To wrap up the week, students participated in another off-site experience: a sports therapy workshop with Sarah Knop , GAH Athletic Trainer at Elite Performance. During the workshop, students discovered the skill and technique required to master the art of taping an ankle successfully.
