Gibson Area Hospital & Health Services | Gibson gets it! | Fall/Winter 2018

Gibson gets it! 13 dedicated and serious. We work out hard, and we have a lot of fun. If you come in at 4:30 a.m., you want to have fun.” Bane, who trains at Elite four days a week, also speaks highly of the staff: “The trainers are awesome. They are always doing something different, and they keep it interesting.” Bane reserves a fifth day for the Elite Running Club, which meets each Wednesday evening for a run together. Saturdays are for his long runs when training for a race. How does someone keep up this pace? “I’m always pushing myself—probably more than I should, but I enjoy it,” Bane says. “Age is starting to be a limiting factor, but I try to push myself to do better all the time.” For this 2017 Illinois Half Marathon winner (65 to 70 age category), a positive attitude; a healthy diet of fruits, vegetables and meats (“I raise beef, so I eat a lot of beef,” he says); and good genes are key to his success. His advice to others: “Be active. Have fun doing something. You don’t have to run a marathon, but you’ll feel better if you’re not sitting on the couch. Just have fun doing it. That’s a lot of it.” Even at 4:30 a.m.? “I’ve always been a morning person—but some days I drink lots of coffee,” Bane confesses with a smile. Weather permitting, Irvin Bane enjoys the outdoors for running, but for his weekday training, he is happy to be indoors at the newest Elite facility in Gibson City—“Having more room is great! There is space to get things done!” Photo by Ivy Ward
