Gibson gets it! 7 Sunderland Society welcomes three new members Gibson Area Hospital board updates We would like to thank retiring Gibson Area Hospital Board Members Curt Homann, John Leonard and Ted Swanson for their years of dedication and service to the hospital board and its mission. We would also like to welcome Mike Peterson, Kevin Seymour and Justin Taylor as they take their places on the board. Curt Homann 2016–2017 John Leonard 2001–2018 Ted Swanson 2005–2018 Six years ago, the Sunderland Society was created to honor those who, like Dr. Paul Sunderland, are dedicated to Gibson Area Hospital & Health Services (GAHHS), its patients, and surrounding communities. This year’s class of inductees is quite exceptional, as they have dedicated well over 110 years of combined service to GAHHS and its vision to be the model of excellence in community-based health care. Those recognized by Gregory Delost, MD, and David J. Hagan, MD, were former GAHHS Lab Director Ken Sprau; William Youngerman, MD, ENT-otolaryngologist; and former GAHHS Hospital board member and longtime volunteer Ted Swanson. Quietly diligent Sprau retired from GAHHS in 2012 after dedicating 46 years to the organization. Dr. Delost described Sprau as a great referee: “You really never knew he was around; things just got taken care of and he was always available to take care of your problems.” Upon receiving his award, Sprau thanked the administration and board members who made it possible for the lab to have good instrumentation and great people—two things needed for a successful laboratory. A life of healing Dr. Youngerman was selected as this year’s physician inductee because he has dedicated over 45 years to caring for patients at GAHHS. He began his career first as a consultant for GAHHS primary care providers in his role as an ear, nose and throat specialist from Christie Clinic. He then transitioned, with urging from Dr. Sunderland, into becoming a provider in the Outpatient Clinic because, as Dr. Youngerman said, “It is a little hard to say no to Dr. Sunderland.” Honored and privileged to be inducted this year, Dr. Youngerman thanked the patients, physicians and staff for always making him feel welcome over the years. Selfless service Swanson, this year’s volunteer inductee, was an “easy choice,” according to Dr. Hagan. “He is the epitome of what a volunteer in this community is.” Among his long list of accomplishments are serving on the Gibson Area Hospital Board of Directors for over 13 years and being active in the hospital advisory group. He was the driving force behind the hospital’s Smile Greeter program and has been involved in the Meals on Wheels program for many years.
