Gibson gets it! 7 Teaching healthy habits During a summer dietetic internship at Gibson Area Hospital, GCMS alumnus and Bradley University student Brooks Schmitt brought an interactive nutrition presentation to the kids attending the Mahomet Area Youth Club Summer Day Camp. Furthering his goal to become a licensed registered dietitian focusing on sports nutrition, Schmitt tested his powers of persuasion with this active group of 5- to 15-year-olds as he used both sweet and savory visual aids to convince them to curb their sugar consumption from bottled beverages and their sodium intake from salty snacks. Schmitt’s own interest in healthy habits developed while he was a young athlete. “Throughout high school I was on the football team, and I was researching the best diet habits for training,” he says. “This got me interested in nutrition and made me passionate about teaching others about living a healthy lifestyle.” 30TH ANNIVERSARY OF GIBSON AREA HOSPITAL Providing Safe Sitter ® classes Safe Sitter® summer courses successfully wrapped up at Gibson Area Hospital, marking the 30th year of Safe Sitter ® classes at Gibson Area Hospital, the first Safe Sitter ® class site among Critical Access Hospitals in Illinois.
