18 www. GibsonHospital.org The Gibson Area Hospital (GAH) Auxiliary held its annual Spring Banquet on April 29 at the First Presbyterian Church in Gibson City. A highlight of the event included the Auxiliary’s presentation of eight scholarships to students pursuing careers in health care. This year’s two Auxiliary scholarships were awarded to Connor Birky, of Gibson City, and Jenny Patel, of Gibson City. Connor, the son of Kurt and Denise Birky, was accepted at Hesston College in Hesston, Kansas, where he is beginning his studies to become a physician assistant. Jenny, the daughter of Piyushkumar and Pallavi Patel, is attending the University of Illinois with the goal of becoming a family practitioner. Future nurse practitioners The two Verna Buck scholarships were awarded to Allison Heavilin, of Gibson City, and Abby Sellek, of Paxton. Allison, the daughter of Matt and Rebecca Heavilin, is continuing her studies in Parkland College’s Associate Degree Nursing Program to eventually become a nurse practitioner. Abby, the daughter of Liz and the late Jeff Sellek, of Paxton, is studying at Lakeview College of Nursing in Danville, Illinois, with plans to continue her education to become a nurse practitioner, as well as pursue a career in healthcare management. The CEDF Scholarship was presented to Nicole Varela, of Melvin. Nicole, the mother of two and a full-time certified nursing assistant, is attending Parkland College in the associate’s degree nursing program. She plans to continue her education for an advanced degree to become a nurse practitioner. A future flight nurse and pharmacist The Arthur and Ane Jensen Noland Scholarship was awarded to Zach Johnson. Zach, the son of Eric and Amy Johnson, of Gibson City, is a student at Illinois State University working toward a Bachelor of Science in Nursing with the goal of becoming a flight nurse. The William and Viola Garrett Scholarship was given to Emily Lange Row, of Gibson City. Emily, the daughter of Stacey and the late Tony Row, is studying at St. Louis College of Pharmacy on the path to a Doctorate of Pharmacy degree. Priceless gifts The GAH Auxiliary Gift Shop Scholarship was presented to Elizabeth Haas Kaeb. Elizabeth—the wife of Andrew Kaeb and daughter of Jerrod and Sally Haas, of Ellsworth— is enrolled in the Parkland College associate’s degree nursing program, with future plans to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. The Auxiliary congratulates each of this year’s scholarship recipients and wishes them all the very best in their chosen fields. The organization encourages anyone pursuing studies leading to a healthcare career to apply for the Auxiliary scholarships during the next application cycle.
